Lauren Gregory catches Naomi Lang in final metres to win thrilling OCC
For most of Thursday afternoon, the OCC looked settled.
Naomi Lang had led from the opening climbs above Orsières, gradually building a small but consistent advantage over a chasing group that included Lauren Gregory and Sara Alonso. Through Champex-Lac, Trient and Vallorcine, the British runner continued to dictate the race, looking increasingly comfortable as the kilometres disappeared.
The race only changed once.
Gregory, who had spent much of the day running patiently a few minutes behind the lead, began closing the gap on the final descent towards Chamonix. She first moved past Sara Alonso before setting off after Lang, eventually catching the race leader inside the final streets of town.
After more than six hours of racing, the two women were separated by just three seconds.
Gregory crossed the line in 6:08:07, with Lang finishing in 6:08:10. Alonso completed the podium in 6:09:11, rounding off one of the closest and most entertaining finishes of UTMB week.
Gregory gets the timing right
Lauren Gregory never appeared interested in matching Lang's early pace.
Instead, the American stayed within striking distance throughout the race, avoiding the temptation to chase the leader too early. It proved to be the right approach.
As Lang's advantage slowly began to disappear in the closing kilometres, Gregory still had enough left to produce the fastest finish of anyone in the women's field. By the time the runners entered Chamonix, the gap had vanished.
The victory continues Gregory's rapid rise over the past two seasons and adds one of the sport's most prestigious 50K titles to her growing résumé.
Naomi Lang leaves with a breakthrough performance
There will naturally be disappointment after coming so close to victory, but Naomi Lang leaves Chamonix with arguably the strongest performance of her career.
She spent almost the entire race at the front, climbing confidently and descending with control while holding off an exceptional chasing group for more than five hours. It took a perfectly timed finish from Gregory to deny the British runner what looked like a memorable OCC victory.
If there were any doubts about whether Lang belongs among the leading names over this distance, Thursday largely answered them.
Another podium for Sara Alonso
Sara Alonso once again showed why she remains one of the most consistent athletes on the international trail circuit.
The Spaniard stayed in contention throughout the day and was still fighting for victory entering the final section of the course before settling for third place.
With Tove Alexandersson withdrawing before the start and several other contenders falling away during the race, Alonso took full advantage to add another major UTMB Finals podium to her record.
Tranchand controls the men's race
The men's race developed very differently.
French veteran Frédéric Tranchand moved to the front early and steadily increased his advantage throughout the afternoon. He reached Chamonix in 5:10:08, taking a convincing victory ahead of Kenya's Nashon Kiplimo, while Spain's Miguel Benítez completed the podium.
One of the biggest stories came before the finish.
Pre-race favourite Rémi Bonnet abandoned the race after struggling through the opening sections, ending hopes of the anticipated duel between two of the strongest climbers in the field.
Strong Norwegian performances
Norway did not feature in the fight for the podium, but several runners delivered encouraging performances.
Ida Amalie Robsahm continued her excellent season by finishing fifth woman, adding another top result at an international championship-level event. After fourth place at Zegama earlier this year and second at the 43K du Mont-Blanc, the ASICS Trail athlete continues to establish herself among Europe's strongest mountain runners.
In the men's race, Jonas Hesthaug finished 39th overall, while Jørgen Jevne crossed the line in 47th.
One notable surprise came from Petter Engdahl. The Swedish mountain running star never found his usual rhythm and finished well down the field after a difficult day in the Alps.
