Mathieu Blanchard’s Heart of Rock ep.
Mathieu Blanchard is back with another short film, and this time there’s one noticeable change: the story is narrated in English.
It takes a little getting used to. The voice-over can feel slightly cheesy in places, especially compared with the more natural feel of some of Blanchard’s previous films. But it works, and after a few minutes it becomes part of the film rather than something you notice.
What remains unchanged is the reason these films are worth watching in the first place. The filming is excellent. The mountains, the running and the small details along the way are captured beautifully, with the kind of shots that make even a familiar trail-running story feel fresh.
At around 15 minutes, it also gets the length right. There’s enough time to tell a story without stretching it into a full documentary.
Not every creative choice lands perfectly, but that hardly matters. If you follow Blanchard or simply enjoy well-made trail running films, this is an easy recommendation.
Worth the 15 minutes.
