Black Diamond x norda 000 Is Built for the Harder Side of the Mountain

There is a particular type of mountain running where the usual definition of a trail shoe starts to feel a little too narrow.

The terrain gets steeper, the rock gets rougher and the pace becomes less important than finding a shoe that can deal with whatever is underfoot. That is where the new Black Diamond x norda 000 sits.

The collaboration brings together norda’s trail footwear expertise with Black Diamond’s background in technical mountain equipment. The result is a shoe designed specifically around rocky, technical terrain rather than fast, runnable trails.

The 000 uses a seamless upper made almost entirely from bio-circular Dyneema, chosen for its combination of low weight and abrasion resistance. The construction also integrates norda’s Lock System, with an external lace setup connected to a lightweight sock-like gusset designed to keep the fit stable when the terrain gets messy.

Underneath, things get equally interesting. The shoe introduces Vibram Stream Flow, a new midsole compound developed for the collaboration, while the outsole combines Vibram Litebase and Megagrip with 5mm lugs. The stack sits at 26mm in the heel and 21mm in the forefoot, giving the shoe a 5mm drop.

At 294 grams in a US men's 8.5, it is not chasing the weight of the latest stripped-back mountain racers. That seems intentional. The 000 is built around durability, ground feel and traction, with the kind of construction that makes more sense when the trail starts looking less like a trail and more like a route through the mountains.

The collaboration was also shaped around Joe Grant, the Black Diamond mountain athlete whose experience helped inform the project. Black Diamond describes the shoe as being developed for mountain athletes, while norda positions it as part of a broader equipment system for terrain where speed naturally gives way to technical movement.

Visually, the 000 is restrained. There is no oversized branding or attempt to make the shoe look futuristic for the sake of it. The Moonstone, Kunzite and Obsidian colourways keep the design relatively quiet, leaving the construction and materials to do most of the talking.

That feels appropriate for the shoe.

The BD x norda 000 is not trying to be the fastest trail shoe on the start line. It is aimed at a different part of the mountain — the technical sections, exposed ridgelines and rocky terrain where grip, protection and confidence matter more than shaving a few grams.

The shoe is available now through Black Diamond and norda, priced at €325 / $295 CAD depending on market.
